Homemaker

Stones, found objects, and white paint

2022

Person, possessions, and place are the three things that we need to protect from interpersonal violence. But those of us without physical or financial power need to invent our own methods of protection. Many people borrow power from religion, but traditional religious systems often turn against the most vulnerable in society. I am left questioning if there is a more direct and inherent way to beseech divine protection.

In nature, eye spots are used by prey animals to intimidate predators. They create an illusion of power that, when challenged, either falls apart or, in the case of poison, destroys both the predator and the prey. In this piece the homemaker has taken a cue from nature to create a security system around herself, her belongings, and the place she rests. The question is whether her illusion will break apart when challenged or reveal something more lethal.
